I really don’t know where to start… Camp Obama was an amazing experience! “Life-Changing” may be a little excessive but we were introduced to a whole new and innovative form of community campaigning that will send our efforts and momentum nation-wide. We literally shed buckets of sweat and tears this weekend as we were hunkered down for 2 days of campaign overload, but when we emerged, we emerged as a stronger more unified Arizona for Obama!

As expected we left with a message that “help is on the way” but not in the way I was expecting. We were given the tools to succeed, the keys to the car, and the strength to get things done even if we wont have campaign staff holding our hand. This campaign belongs to us now. And to make that a little more clear, there might be a day when we will have campaign staff on the ground here in Arizona, but until then they are with us every step of the way, and they will be providing us with tools we desperately need to get things done. I don’t want to go into too many details here… for those you will have to come to our next meeting Aug 15. I will post that info below and on our calendar.

For those of you who have been shying away from becoming more active in this campaign… you have to stop now!! We need you. Our new structure of organization will break down the county in such a way that everyone has a role, a very important role. This new structure was taught to us through the brilliant and very experienced Obama staff is a road map to success. If we all work together, us here in Pima, the entire nation of volunteers, the professionals on staff and even Senator Obama… if we all work together, this campaign can make history!! So get off the fence, send us an e-mail, come to a meeting, and lets put our efforts together in such a way that every ounce of your independent organizing will make the largest impact possible.

I want to leave you with a couple upcoming events and a slide show from Camp Obama.

What an incredible meeting we had tonight!

Tonight, Tucson Arizonans for Obama had our first general meeting at the Pima County Democratic Headquarters. Nearly thirty people attended today’s meeting, and the energy in the room was breath-taking! How exciting to see so many people energized to help elect Obama as our next president, while it is still so early into the campaign season!

Tonight, we talked about Camp Obama, an exciting opportunity for Tucson volunteers to receive free training on canvassing, activism, organization and other skills critical to working in a political campaign. We discussed logistics for getting Camp Obama participants to Phoenix, and for subsequent trips to Las Vegas, Nevada.

We also talked about the upcoming debate on August 9th, when Democratic presidential candidates will debate, for the first time, exclusively on issues affecting the LGBT ommunity. Tucson AFO is running a debate-watching party at Woody’s bar, starting Wednesday, August 9th at 6pm. Posters and quarter-card sized flyers are available for download here.

We also talked briefly about volunteer opportunities for you.

Finally, we talked about Tucson AFO’s online presence: this blog, our MySpace, and an upcoming YouTube video channel. Please bookmark this site and keep posted for more information!

Thanks to everyone for attending! We look forward to seeing you at our next general meeting, currently scheduled for Wednesday, September 12th, Pima County Democratic HQ.
